Oceans. They define life on our blue planet. They cover most of the world. They provide us with countless resources, great beauty across the globe, and more enjoyable summers.
Oceans are also the home of a vast number of species. More than most people can even imagine. Under the surface, there is a whole other world with completely different rules and looks. And the whole planet benefits from this sea world.
So, humans should treat the ocean with the care and respect that such a delicate and essential ecosystem deserves.
Unfortunately, they do not. At least, not all of them. People dump their garbage into rivers, lakes, and beaches. Eventually, a large portion of all the trash humans produce finds its way to the sea. Especially plastics. Plastic waste circulates through the ecosystem. And the pollution harms some species to the edge of extinction.
Every single year, billions of pounds of trash end up in the ocean.
Some of the trash piles up on beaches. But some keep floating in the ocean. There are even garbage islands formed by floating debris in the sea.
And at this rate, future generations will not have the beaches we enjoy today.
But, not all hope is lost. Many people, like you, want to protect our seas.
This year, some of the biggest content creators on the internet teamed up for a project called #TeamSeas. The #TeamSeas project aims to remove 30 million pounds of trash from the seas by January 1st, 2022. During this project, for every single dollar you donate, one pound of trash will be removed from the ocean.
“+1$=-1 lb trash”
Together we can reach the goal.
